Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues to lead console sales with 52 million copies, while Pokémon Scarlet & Violet reaches 20 million.

The Nintendo Switch has reached the mark of 122 million units sold worldwide and has established itself as the third best-selling console in history. The information was released on Tuesday (7) with the new financial results of the Japanese company. With this performance, the hybrid console surpassed PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Game Boy, which total 117 million and 118.69 million, respectively, according to a survey by VGChartz. In front are only the Nintendo DS, with 154 million, and the PlayStation 2, with 155 million consoles sold worldwide. Check out, below, more details on the subject.

Nintendo estimates to sell 19 million consoles this fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2023. The forecast is lower than the initial expectation of 21 million units, as the company has struggled to produce consoles with the recent semiconductor crisis and other logistical issues. If the pace is maintained, the Nintendo Switch is expected to become the best-selling console in history in approximately two years.

On the other hand, domestic software sales are in full swing on the handheld platform. There were more than 172 million games sold in the first nine months of the current fiscal year – even though this represents a 4% year-over-year decline. The highlight is Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, which has sold more than 20 million copies in its first six weeks and has already established itself as the seventh biggest hit on the platform.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which is a re-release of the original Wii U game, continues to be the sales leader with over 52 million copies sold. In this fiscal year alone, it has already amassed more than 6 million additional units. The Booster Course Pack, which keeps updating the game with new tracks until the end of 2023, may be one of the culprits. See the list with the Nintendo Switch sales leaders:

  1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 52 million;
  2. Animal Crossing: New Horizons – 41.59 million;
  3. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 30.44 million;
  4. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 29 million;
  5. Pokémon Sword and Shield – 25.68 million;
  6. Super Mario Odyssey – 25.12 million;
  7. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet – 20.61 million.

  1. Super Mario Party – 18.79 million;
  2. Ring Fit Adventure – 15.22 million;
  3. Pokémon Let’s Go – 15.07 million.

On the horizon, Nintendo has releases like Pikmin 4 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which is the long-awaited sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. With no release details yet, Metroid Prime 4 is also still in development after having its production restarted from scratch in 2019, which left the project in charge of Retro.

It’s worth noting that Nintendo has announced a new Nintendo Direct for this Wednesday (8), at 7pm EST. The live broadcast will be around 40 minutes long and promises information mainly about games arriving in the first half of 2023, which includes The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – whose release happens on May 28. It can be expected that the company will also announce new
games to fill the calendar in the coming months.
