Volkswagen has unveiled a heavily revamped version of its beloved Golf hatchback, marking the 50th anniversary of this automotive icon. The updated model boasts a range of significant improvements, including a substantial boost in electric range and a revamped charging system for its plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain.

Specifications

The PHEV variants of the new Golf are powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine and an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 201 horsepower in the eHybrid and a thrilling 268 horsepower in the GTE. The electric motor draws its energy from a 19.7-kWh battery, enabling an impressive electric range of up to 100 miles according to the WLTP testing procedure.

This substantial increase in electric range surpasses the previous-generation Golf PHEV, which only offered a 62-mile electric range. The larger battery also allows for faster charging, with the new Golf PHEV capable of being fully charged from an 11-kW AC wallbox in just 2.5 hours. For an even quicker recharge, the PHEV can be juiced up from a 50-kW DC fast charger in a mere 38 minutes.

Beyond its extended electric range and improved charging capabilities, the new Golf PHEV comes equipped with a host of other enhancements. The infotainment system receives a significant upgrade with the introduction of a 10.4- or 12.9-inch touchscreen display running on the latest MIB4 software platform. This new system offers enhanced performance and usability along with a sleeker interface. Additionally, a new voice assistant powered by natural language processing is now available for intuitive control of various vehicle functions.

The 2024 Volkswagen Golf PHEV represents a substantial leap forward compared to its predecessor. The extended electric range and faster charging times make it an even more practical and appealing option for drivers seeking to reduce their reliance on gasoline.

The revamped Golf PHEV is expected to hit European and US markets in the spring of 2023. The final prices of all versions have not yet been published by the carmaker.
