Volkswagen to Kill ID.3 to Make Way for Electric Golf

Volkswagen is set to kill off its ID.3 electric hatchback in order to make room for an all-new electric Golf, according to a report from Top Gear.

The ID.3 was launched in 2020 as Volkswagen’s first mass-market electric vehicle, and it has been a commercial success, with over 500,000 units sold worldwide. However, the car has faced criticism for its relatively high price and limited range.

What’s new?

The new electric Golf, which is expected to be released in 2028, will be based on Volkswagen’s new Modular Electric Toolkit (MEB) platform, which is also used for the ID.3. The new Golf is expected to be more affordable and have a longer range than the ID.3.

“There is not enough room for two or three different models that would appeal to the same customer,” said Kai Grunitz, Volkswagen’s head of technical development. “The target group of the new electric Golf will overlap with the ID.3.”

Grunitz also said that Volkswagen is committed to keeping the Golf name alive. “The Golf is the heart of our brand,” he said. “The electric Golf will be a true Golf. It will look like a Golf, be affordable like a Golf, and be capable like a Golf.”

The new electric Golf is expected to be priced from around $35,000, which would make it more affordable than the current ID.3, which starts at around $40,000. The new Golf is also expected to have a range of over 300 miles, which would be a significant improvement over the ID.3’s range of around 260 miles.

In addition to the new electric Golf, Volkswagen is also planning to launch a new electric SUV called the ID.Tiguan in 2026. The ID.Tiguan will be based on the same MEB platform as the ID.3 and the new Golf.
