YouTube Reverses Course, Plans to Develop App for Apple Vision Pro

Just weeks after stating that it had no plans to develop a dedicated app for Apple's Vision Pro headset, as reported by The Verge, YouTube has announced that it is now working on one. The move comes as a surprise to many, as YouTube was one of several major companies, including Netflix and Spotify, that initially ruled out supporting the platform.

What Led to the Change?

There are two main factors that likely contributed to YouTube’s change of heart. First, the company may have been swayed by the strong initial sales of the Vision Pro headset.

According to estimates, Apple sold up to 180,000 units of the headset during its first weekend of pre-orders. This suggests that there is a significant potential market for VR apps, and YouTube may not want to miss out on it.

Second, the existence of a popular third-party app for the Vision Pro may have also played a role in YouTube’s decision. The app, called Juno, allows users to watch YouTube videos in VR. Its popularity suggests that there is a strong demand for VR content on the Vision Pro platform.

What Does This Mean for the Future of VR?

YouTube’s decision to develop a Vision Pro app is a significant development for the VR industry. It suggests that major players are starting to take VR seriously and that they are willing to invest in developing apps for the platform. This is a positive sign for the future of VR, as it indicates that the technology is gaining mainstream acceptance.

What About Netflix and Spotify?

While YouTube has changed its mind about the Vision Pro, Netflix and Spotify remain committed to their decision not to develop dedicated apps for the platform. This is likely due to the fact that the first generation of the Vision Pro is not designed for mass adoption. However, it is possible that these companies will reconsider their stance in the future, as VR technology continues to evolve and become more widely accepted.
