Toyota has once again demonstrated its commitment to innovation by filing the most patents in the automotive industry in 2023. The Japanese automaker submitted a total of 2,667 patent applications to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, far outpacing its rivals.

Hyundai was the second-place finisher with 2,052 patents, followed by Ford with 1,306. Toyota’s dominance was even more impressive when considering all industries, not just automotive. The company ranked seventh overall, behind only Samsung, LG, IBM, Qualcomm, Taiwan Semiconductor, and Canon.

Toyota’s success is no accident

It is the result of the hard work of its researchers and engineers, who are dedicated to developing new technologies that will shape the future of mobility. Approximately half of Toyota’s patent applications in 2023 related to electrification, autonomous driving, and other advanced technologies.

Toyota is investing heavily in research and development to achieve its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. The company spends ¥1.24 trillion (US$10 billion) on R&D each year, which is equivalent to approximately ¥22 million (US$180,000) per hour.

Toyota’s commitment to innovation is clear

The company is constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the automotive industry. Its leadership in patent registrations is a testament to its dedication to developing new technologies that will benefit consumers and the environment.
