Rivian R2 Leaks Ahead of Schedule

Rivian R2 Design Styling Rendering

The Rivian R2 is an upcoming electric SUV that is scheduled to be unveiled on March 7th. However, ahead of the official reveal, the R2’s specifications, pricing, and some features have been leaked via the company’s website.

The Leak

The leak was discovered by several internet sleuths who were browsing the source code of the Rivian R2 website. The source code contained a wealth of information about the upcoming vehicle, including:

  • Price: Starting at $47,000
  • Range: Up to 330 miles
  • Acceleration: 0-60 mph in 3 seconds
  • Seating capacity: 5
  • Dimensions: 4,714 mm long, 1,880 mm wide (including mirrors 2,144 mm), and 1,699 mm high

The leak also mentions a power rear window and a “NACS charging port,” though it is unclear if the R2 will be able to charge at both NACS and CCS charging stations. We also learned a bit about the front trunk, or “frunk”: “We designed our vehicles with maximum storage space in mind. The spacious frunk offers plenty of room to store large items, from weekend gear to weekly groceries.” Rivian also mentions a special bike mounting system that simply slots into the rear accessory ports.

Competition for Tesla

The R2 is Rivian’s first next-generation electric vehicle, following the R1S and R1T. The automaker designed it to be its entry-level model for the mass market, using what it learned from the R1 program to engineer it. It is aimed squarely at the Tesla Model Y, which is currently the most popular electric vehicle in the world. As we reported previously, the R2 is expected to be the first Rivian electric vehicle to officially come to Europe.

The leak is a major setback for Rivian. The company had been hoping to build excitement for the R2’s reveal, but now that the cat is out of the bag, some of the luster has worn off. However, the leak also gives us a good look at what to expect from the R2, and it is clear that Rivian has a serious competitor to the Model Y on its hands.
