A new study by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) has found that the Toyota Prius Prime is the greenest car of 2024. The study, called GreenerCars, takes into account the environmental impact of a vehicle's entire life cycle, from production to disposal.

The Prius Prime is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) that can travel up to 44 miles on electricity alone. It gets an EPA-estimated 133 MPGe combined, which means it uses the equivalent of 133 miles per gallon of gasoline.

The Prius Prime scored 71 points in the GreenerCars study, beating out the second-place Lexus RZ 300e and third-place Mini Cooper SE by four points. The Nissan Leaf and Toyota bZ4X were tied for fourth place with 66 points.

Prius Prime’s small battery size was one of the reasons

The study’s authors say that the Prius Prime’s small battery size is one of the reasons why it scored so high. The battery is less than one-tenth the size of that in the monstrous Hummer EV. This means that it takes less energy to produce and recycle the Prius Prime’s battery.

The Prius Prime’s high efficiency is also a factor in its green score. The car’s hybrid system combines a gasoline engine with an electric motor to maximize fuel efficiency.

The GreenerCars study is a reminder that not all electric vehicles are created equal. Some EVs, like the Prius Prime, are more environmentally friendly than others.

Here are some other key findings from the GreenerCars study:

  • The average electric vehicle scored 58 points, while the average gasoline-powered car scored 37 points.
  • The greenest car in each category was a plug-in hybrid.
  • The size of a vehicle’s battery has a significant impact on its environmental impact.
  • Electric vehicles are not always the greenest option, especially if they are driven long distances.

The GreenerCars study is a valuable resource for consumers who are looking for an environmentally friendly car. The study’s authors say that the best way to choose a green car is to consider your individual needs and driving habits.
