Apple is reportedly in discussions with Google to license its powerful artificial intelligence (AI) engine, Gemini, for upcoming iPhone features. This collaboration could mark a significant shift in the relationship between the two tech giants.

A Potential Shift as Apple Considers Google’s Gemini for Advanced iPhone Features

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is looking to leverage Gemini’s capabilities for “cloud-based generative AI” features on the iPhone. These features could include functions like generating text formats or creating images based on user prompts.

While Apple is developing its own on-device AI models for iOS 18, Gurman suggests these may not be as advanced as Google’s technology in certain areas. This partnership would allow Apple to tap into Google’s vast computational resources and established large language models.

The news comes amidst reports that Apple has also been in talks with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, another powerful AI tool. This suggests Apple is exploring various options to bolster its AI offerings on iPhones.

It’s important to note that the discussions are ongoing, and no deal has been finalized. The nature of the partnership and how Gemini would be integrated into iPhones remain unclear. We might learn more details at Apple’s upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, where major iOS updates are typically announced.
