Apple Eyes Baidu’s AI for iOS 18 in China

Apple's rumored foray into generative AI for iOS 18 takes an interesting turn with reports of discussions with Chinese tech giant Baidu. Generative AI, like LaMDA or Baidu's Ernie Bot, can create realistic text, translate languages, and even write different kinds of creative content.

Negotiations not only with BAIDU

While Apple is known for developing its own technologies, the Wall Street Journal suggests they’re exploring partnerships. Baidu’s involvement would likely be limited to China, where the company dominates the search engine market and has government approval for over 40 generative AI models. This strategy aligns with Apple’s history of tailoring features for specific regions.

There’s no confirmation if Apple is talking to other Chinese AI companies, but they’ve also reportedly been in touch with Google’s AI arm, DeepMind, and OpenAI. This suggests Apple is shopping around for the best generative AI solution, potentially integrating it into features unseen before in iOS.

We’ll likely hear more details about Apple’s AI plans at WWDC 2024 in June, where they traditionally unveil upcoming iOS features. With generative AI being a hot tech trend, Apple including it in iOS 18 could be a game-changer for user experience.
