The European Union (EU) is celebrating a momentous occasion as electric vehicles (EVs) achieved a historic milestone in June 2023. For the very first time, EV sales surpassed diesel vehicle sales, indicating a potential turning point in the automotive industry. As per data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), the statistics show a remarkable growth in battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales, while diesel's market share witnessed a decline.
Impressive Growth of BEVs
According to ACEA’s statistics, in June 2023, the sales of BEVs witnessed a remarkable year-on-year increase of 66.2%, amounting to a total of 158,252 units sold. This figure represents a significant 15.1% share of the newly registered car market, a substantial jump from the previous year’s 10.7%. The surge in BEV sales reflects a growing preference for electric mobility, driven by advancements in technology and increasing environmental awareness among consumers.
Diesel’s Decline: In stark contrast to the soaring numbers of EVs, diesel vehicles experienced a decline in their market share. In June 2023, diesel cars accounted for only 13.4% of new car registrations, witnessing a drop from the previous year’s 17.4%. The decrease in diesel sales can be attributed to various factors, including stricter emission regulations, the growing popularity of electric alternatives, and consumer concerns over the environmental impact of diesel engines.

Tesla Model Y Leading the EV Market
Among the array of electric vehicles available in the EU market, the Tesla Model Y emerged as the top-selling BEV in June 2023. Not only did it dominate the EV segment that month, but it has also maintained its position as the best-selling electric car overall since the beginning of the year. Tesla’s success highlights the company’s commitment to delivering high-performance electric vehicles that resonate with consumers.
Is this the Turning Point?
While the surge in EV sales is undoubtedly significant, it remains to be seen whether this trend will continue in the coming months and years. Various factors, such as infrastructure development, government incentives, and technological advancements, will play crucial roles in shaping the future of the automotive industry. The sustained growth of electric mobility will heavily depend on how these elements align to support and encourage further adoption of EVs.
The EU’s achievement of surpassing diesel car sales with electric vehicles in June 2023 marks a pivotal moment in the region’s automotive landscape. The notable increase in BEV sales indicates a growing shift towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation options. As the automotive industry continues to evolve, all eyes will be on how various stakeholders collaborate to drive further growth in the electric vehicle market. The push towards a greener and more electrified future is undoubtedly gaining momentum in the EU, promising exciting prospects for the world of electric mobility.
