In Norway, combustion cars lag behind electric cars in sales, which account for 80% of new cars. Which cars are currently the most successful in Norway? And how are hybrids doing?
Norway is flooded with electric cars
In May, the Norwegian car market saw a year-on-year increase of 16%, with a total of 13,342 cars sold in the Nordic country. However, when looking at the sales from January, there was a slight year-on-year loss of around 5%, with a total of 50,983 cars sold.
What is growing at an enormous pace, though, is the sales of electric vehicles. In May, over 10,000 electric cars were sold, accounting for a total of 80.7% of the overall sales volume. This represents an increase of more than 7% compared to the previous year.

Model Y dominates the Norwegian market
If we were to include the sales of all types of hybrids in addition to purely electric cars, we would reach an amazing share of nearly 90% of the total car sales volume in Norway. Among individual vehicles, the Tesla Model Y reigns supreme without competition. In May, it accounted for 20% of all car sales.
However, the Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.3, Škoda Enyaq iV, and BMW iX1 also perform well in the local market. According to the latest figures, electric vehicles already make up more than one-fifth of all cars in Norway. It’s no wonder that this country is often seen as an exemplary model for the approach to electromobility.
