WhatsApp is the world's most widely used chat app from tech giant Meta. The developers are constantly adding various improvements to the app, and one of their interests is the expanded possibilities of expressing yourself with smileys, GIFs, stickers and various reactions. Now they have worked for a long time to implement animated smileys.
Moving emoji in WhatsApp
According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has been working on these animated emoji since the middle of last year. In June 2022, it was revealed that WhatsApp was working on a heartbeat emoji reaction. Now, the animated emoji have come to the latest beta version of the desktop app.
The animations are created using the Lottie format, which offers an economical solution for mobile devices. This is important in terms of the plethora of phones on which WhatsApp users use the app. Not everyone has the latest technology in storage and RAM.

WhatsApp has a lot of catching up to do
WhatsApp’s key competitor, Telegram, is well ahead in this area. It provides a plethora of ways to express yourself not directly with words. These include animated emoji, reactions and the ability to convert any video into stickers.
The feature is still in the testing phase and it’s unclear when it will make its way to global versions of WhatsApp. The whole process may take some time and it is impossible to determine exactly when WhatsApp end users will see it.
